Since 2003, Friends of Arizona Archives has sponsored a $250 prize at the Arizona History Convention for the paper that demonstrates the best use of archival research, preferably using multiple collections from more than one archival repository.
To be eligible for the prize, a paper must first be accepted for the convention program. Only one convention proposal per person will be considered. Proposals should include name, address, and phone number, along with the title of the presentation and a one-page description of the paper. Presentation length is strictly limited to twenty minutes.
Following notification of the paper's acceptance for the conference program, presenters wishing to be considered for the prize must submit a completed paper of no more than twelve double-spaced, typed pages (exclusive of notes) to Bruce Dinges at the Arizona Historical Society (949 E. Second Street; Tucson, AZ 85719). Only papers that have not been presented elsewhere will be eligible for prizes.
An electronic copy of the paper, in Microsoft Word (.doc) or Rich Text Format (.rtf), should be included. All papers considered for the FAzA Award for Excellence in Archival Research must include a complete bibliography of primary and secondary resources. A sample bibliography (in PDF format) is provided here, but any style guide may be used, as long as the citations are clear and consistent, and primary and secondary resources are clearly labeled.
The deadlines for convention proposals and prize applications vary from year to year. The deadlines for this year's convention, in Prescott from April 23 to April 26, have already passed.
